Preparing to receive your new Koi.
Before your new koi arrives the following steps need to be taken to give you the best chance at success:
Step 1 - The basic water tests need to be done & be within safe parameters. These include Ammonia, Nitrite, PH, Chlorine & some mucus scrapes to ensure you have no parasites when examined under a microscope.
Step 2 - Take advantage of Josh's knowledge. Take the time to get your pond in the best state to receive your Koi. We recommend using Pure Dried Vacuum Salt (PDV) to raise the salt levels in the pond to 0.3%. A salt meter is preferred however alternatively if you know how many litres your pond is accurately this would be 3kg of salt for every 1000 litres.
Salting the pond to 0.3% helps your koi replenish lost salt through over-hydrating caused by rapid breathing due to stress. This can cause an osmotic imbalance without salt in the pond. Stress also lowers the Koi's immune system which is why step 1 is so important.
Hold this salt level for 7-10 days then slowly dilute via a trickle in or water changes.
If you suspect the koi are struggling to regulate the salt level can be raised to 0.75%
